A Qatari citizen has posted a warning on social media that maintaining peace is critical for Qatar to maintain its international status.
The man, who has not been identified, has written on Twitter: “The only thing that keeps the peace in Qatar is the Qataris, and it is a constant struggle to keep it”.
Qatar’s foreign minister, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, responded to the threat on Twitter, writing: “We are aware of this statement.
We will not allow Qatar to undermine its international standing and its sovereignty.
Qatar is a sovereign country and the Qatari Emir has full sovereign authority.”
The minister said he “did not want to offend anyone”.
Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Tamimi Al Thawadi said Qatar would respond to the tweet, saying: “Our stance is clear.
We respect and defend the rights of other nations and our citizens.
But we will not tolerate any attempt to undermine our international standing.”
Mr Al Thowadi also tweeted a video message saying Qatar’s “freedom is under attack”.
“We have been under constant attacks, and we are constantly working to maintain peace and stability.
We hope to keep this peace and security under our control.
We have nothing to hide,” he said.
Qatar has been a major supplier of military equipment to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Arab states and a major investor in oil and gas.
The UAE, which hosts about half of Qatar’s population, is also one of its closest allies.
