On the surface, it’s not so much the weather but the physical condition of your body that matters, said Daniel Kroll, director of health and safety for the insurance company that manages many of the health insurance plans offered by insurers.
For example, if your job requires you to wear a mask, it will likely keep you cool enough to work even in extreme weather conditions.
If your job also requires you wearing a mask or wearing a hat during certain parts of the day, that could keep you cooler than if you were out for a walk or exercising.
But there are a few risks that can arise when you have a mask and gloves on at the same time.
“In a few cases, wearing a face mask or gloves can increase your risk of developing respiratory or cardiovascular problems because of increased airflow,” said Kroll.
If you have trouble breathing in extreme temperatures, or if your mask or glove don’t fit snugly enough to keep air flowing into your lungs, that can increase the risk of respiratory infections.
“The gloves, when they become loose, can be difficult to remove,” Kroll said.
“If you have to take off gloves and mask, be sure to wear the gloves until you can get the mask off.
That way you can breathe in fresh air.”
For those with allergies, there’s the risk that wearing masks can cause you to breathe in the wrong air, said Koppelman.
And there’s also the risk you may be allergic to one of the medications prescribed for a mask.
“You may have trouble using the mask in the hospital because the mask might not fit properly,” he said.
The good news is that the National Institutes of Health has a number of resources for you to help you get started on managing your body heat.
For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers a free toolkit that includes a list of mask tips for those on the hunt for a suitable mask, along with information on the best way to use your mask and mask accessories.
“It’s important to remember that you’re not wearing your mask at home,” Koppelmans said.
“Your mask will not protect you in an emergency.”
So if you’re worried about wearing a helmet or a mask when you’re out in public, Koppelsmans says you can use the tools at his website to find a mask that’s suitable for you.
“I can help you determine the best mask for you, and then you can go out in the public and try to find the mask that best suits you,” Kollman said.
For those who are concerned about their own health, Kroll suggests that you talk to your doctor about whether it’s safe for you and whether you need to go to the doctor for an X-ray.
